NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Seniors Chiara Greco (Hamilton, Ont.) and Ashley Mandrino (Farmington, N.Y.) both scored in their final career home game, but it wasn't enough as the women's soccer team (8-9-1, 4-5-0 MAAC) dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the Iona Gaels (8-11-1, 5-4-0 MAAC) on Senior Day.
Down 2-1 in the 74th minute, a scrum in front of the Iona net ensued, with Mandrino emerging to score her second career goal to knot the game at two. The score would hold until the 96th minute, when Kendra Chisolm broke past the Niagara defense and slipped the game-winning goal past junior netminder Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.).
The game started out well for the Purple Eagles, when a header pass from sophomore Laura Kimoto (Scarborough, Ont.) made it to Greco, who in turn made her way into the box and ripped a shot just inside the near post for the 1-0 lead. Niagara would hold the 1-0 lead into halftime, where they were outshooting Iona 3-2.
Iona tied the game at one in the 61st minute, on a penalty kick by Gabriella D'Aprile. Iona took a 2-1 lead just over four minutes later, when Chisolm came streaking down the right side and put a shot on net, which Bowers pushed out, but it hit a Niagara defender and went into the Niagara net.
Niagara has earned the sixth seed in the 2009 MAAC Tournament and will start its quest for a conference title on Friday, Oct. 30 at 11 a.m., when they play in the quarterfinals of the 2009 MAAC Tournament.
Fans can catch a tape delayed edition of the Niagara versus Iona game at 7 p.m. on Oct. 25 on Lockport Community Television and throughout the upcoming week.
