Women's Basketball Falls At No. 25 Marist

Liz Flooks

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Niagara fell to the 25th-ranked Marist Red Foxes 98-51 in its first conference road game of the season. Jennifer McNamee (Oxford, Ohio) and Liz Flooks (White Plains, N.Y.) both scored in double-figures for the Purple and White.

Marist (14-1, 5-0 MAAC), who leads the conference in every major offensive category, shot 47.7 percent (31-for 65) from the field, 48.1 percent (13-for-27) behind the 3-point line and 88.5 percent (23-for-26) at the free throw line.

Niagara (1-14, 0-4 MAAC) was down 17-13 after a Flooks jumper at 11:34 when the Red Foxes broke open the game with a 13-2 run in the next five minutes behind 3 3-pointers.

Marist would take a 41-23 halftime lead. The Purple Eagles and the Red Foxes both shot over 40 percent from the field in the first half, but the difference was Marist’s six 3-pointers to Niagara’s one.

McNamee and Flooks carried the load to start the second half, scoring the Purple Eagles’ first 11 points, but the Red Foxes offensive fire power was too much too handle.

Marist’s Rachele Fitz scored six of the team’s first eight second half points after being held without a field goal in the first. The Red Foxes also could not miss from behind the arc; seven players made a 3-pointer in the game, led by guard Julianne Viani with a game-high three.

Flooks, who entered the game connecting on 24-straight free throws, had her streak snapped at 27. She was 3-for-4 in the game and led the Purple and White with 14 points. McNamee finished the game with 10 points.

Niagara will continue its road trip with a date at the Siena Saints on Sunday at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Time Warner Sports (channel 13) in Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Olean and Bradford, Pa. and on Time Warner SportsNet (channel 3) in Albany.
