LAS VEGAS – Niagara (5-2-1) suffered a 4-0 defeat against No. 25 UNLV Rebels (7-2-1) in the final game of the 2008 UNLV Classic.
The 2007 Mountain West Conference (MWC) champion UNLV Rebels entered the match ranked for the first-time in school history (No. 25 in Soccer America), but lost their first game of their classic to Robert Morris on Friday.
Niagara fell behind three minutes into the game and never put its stamp on the game. Amanda Forrester’s goal in the third minute was followed by Rebel goals in the 40th, 62nd and 76th minutes.
Niagara’s 13.86 shots per game are tied for second in the MAAC, but the Rebels defense held the Purple Eagles to only two shots in the game.
The match versus UNLV was Niagara’s first game versus a ranked opponent since playing No. 9 Penn State in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
Niagara leaves Las Vegas 0-1-1 after tying Idaho 2-2 in the opening game of the classic on Friday night.
The Purple Eagles return to the east coast for a road date at Binghamton on September 24 at 7 p.m.
