CONWAY, S.C. - The Purple Eagle men's soccer team (2-0) again used a strong second half effort to claim their second victory in as many days, as Niagara defeated Florida Atlantic 1-0 to claim the Coastal Carolina University/Adidas Invitational championship.
In the 66th minute, Desmond Betteto (Sarnia, Ont.) set up Matt Durand (Melbourne, Australia) as he hit a solid cross, which Eric Brodfuehrer (Tonawanda, N.Y.) headed into the net for the only goal of the contest. Goalkeeper John Fiutowski (Ottawa, Ont.) then had to make a clutch save with thirty seconds left to ensure the win and his fourth career clean sheet.
The 2-0 start is Niagara's best start to a season in over eight years, something that head coach Dermot McGrane is excited about.
"I am very proud of the way our team played today, especially with the extremely hot conditions on the field,” McGrane said.  “We faced some high quality opponents in this tournament and I feel good about both of our victories.”
The Purple Eagles will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 5 when they host the Oakland Golden Grizzles at 7:30 pm as part of the Niagara Falls Classic.
