LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Senior Mike Jarvis (Lancaster, N.Y.) carded a 1-under-par in the opening round of the 2008 MAAC Championships, finishing the day in second place at Disney's Magonlia Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. on Friday. The Purple Eagles sit in fourth place after day one.
Jarvis, who finished in the top 10 the last two years, is looking to become the first Purple Eagle to win the Championship. He sits two strokes behind Loyola's Matt Bassler, who shot a 69 to open the tournament.
Loyola took the lead after day one with a four-man total of 299. Fairfield and Rider are next with a 300 and 303, respectively. Niagara's 304 four-man total is seven strokes better than fifth place (Iona & Siena).
"Mike had a great start to the tournament," head coach Kevin Miller said. "We scored well, and look to move up [Saturday]."
Jason Polka (Lewiston, N.Y.) recorded Niagara's second-best round of the day with a 4-over-par 76. Don Bryson (Brantford, Ont.) and Joe Tonnos (St. Catherines, Ont.) contributed rounds of 77 and 80, respectively. Chris Singleton (Niagara Falls, Ont.) shot a 90 on Friday.
The three-day tournament continues in Disney on Saturday and Sunday.
