Women's Basketball Welcomes Oakland For Season Home Opener

The Niagara Purple Eagles are ready to step on the Gallagher Center’s court for their first home game of the season. Niagara (0-1) will host the Oakland Grizzlies (1-0) in a rematch from last December’s game played in Rochester, Mich.

- Niagara is 21-12 all-time in home openers.

- Niagara head coach Kendra Faustin is entering her second season as the head coach for the Purple Eagles.

- Jennifer McNamee was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Third Team.

- Niagara’s seven freshmen account for 43.7 percent of the team’s roster.

- Niagara was 10-10 from the free-throw line against Michigan State in the season opener.

- The Purple Eagles are 3-3 all-time against the Summit League.

Last Time Out

The Niagara women’s basketball team (0-1) lost its 2008-09 season opener to Big Ten member and last season’s WNIT runners-up, the Michigan State Spartans, 116-50 at the Breslin Center on Friday night. Jaclyn Konieczka (Parma, Ohio) led the Purple Eagles with eight points.

 

High-Five In Home Openers

The Purple Eagles have ran off five-straight home opening games victories. Niagara has defeated Cleveland State, Vernmont, Syracuse and Colgate with an average score of 78-59.6. Niagara is 21-12 all-time in home openers. 

 

Faustin’s Home Openers

Niagara head coach Kendra Faustin is entering her second season as the head coach for the Purple Eagles. She won her home debut with a 87-76 victory over Youngstown State at the Gallagher Center.  Faustin is 5-2 in home openers as an assistant or head coach. She was 1-0 as an assistant coach at Gannon University (2001-02), 1-1 as an assistant at Hillsdale College (2002-04) and 2-1 as an assistant at Canisius College.

 

Freshmen Contribution

Five freshmen made their Niagara debuts in the season opener on November 14 at Michigan State. Guards Laura Brunet, Grace Cunningham and Ali Morris and forwards Paige Faine and Meghan Waterman combined for 11 points, seven rebounds, one assists and two steals.

 

Perfection From The Line

The Purple Eagles were a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line in their season opener against Michigan State. Jennifer McNamee led the team with a 4-for-4 effort at the charity line; Liz Flooks, Ali Morris and Julie Gebhard each went 2-for-2.
