Wilson's Career Night Propels Women's Basketball to 67-59 Victory

Sarah Wilson

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The women's basketball team (4-15, 2-6 MAAC) used a powerful inside game en route to a 67-59 victory over Saint Peter's (13-6, 5-3 MAAC) on Friday inside the Gallagher Center, ending a nine-game losing streak. The Purple Eagles grabbed as many rebounds (59) as Saint Peter's tallied points on the night.

Senior Sarah Wilson (St. Catherines, Ont.) recorded her second double-double of the year with a career-high 24 points and 16 rebounds. The 6-foot-2 forward grabbed eight of Niagara's 20 offensive rebounds.

"This feels fantastic," Wilson said of the victory. "We have been working so hard in lately and tonight, things finally broke through for us."

Freshman Liz Flooks (White Plains, N.Y.) tallied her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds (7 offensive).

From the opening tip, Niagara worked the ball in the paint, jumping out to a 16-8 lead by the second media timeout. All but two points in the opening run were scored inside the paint, as NU held a 32-24 advantage down low.

The Purple Eagles also were aggressive on the glass, outrebounding the Peahens 59-32. The 59 caroms was the most by NU so far this season.

"The keys to tonight was that we were aggressive down low and we handled their press break more effectively," head coach Kendra Faustin explained. "Those were big differences from the last time we played them. Our rebounding was great tonight."

The second half was tightly contested, with Saint Peter's tying the score on two separate occasions, while Niagara's lead seemed to hover around four. The Purple Eagles pulled away at the 2:40 mark, as NU finished the game on an 11-for-11 streak at the foul line.

The Purple Eagles return to the hardwood on Sunday, playing host to Manhattan at 2 p.m.
