Women’s Soccer Posts Second-Straight Victory

Brittany Bisnott

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – On the strength of senior Brittany Bisnott’s first-half goal, the Niagara women’s soccer team cruised to a 1-0 victory over Robert Morris Sunday afternoon at Niagara Field. With its second-straight win, Niagara improves to 5-4-0, while Robert Morris falls to 3-6-1.

"I’m glad we ended our non-conference schedule with a victory," head coach Peter Veltri said. "I don’t think we played our best soccer. We need to do a better job of controlling the tempo and the center of the park."

Bisnott’s goal came in the 22nd minute off a scramble in the box. The Brampton, Ont., native’s first shot was saved by Robert Morris’ Jessica Onufer and the rebound fell to NU freshman Caitlyn Kilkenny (Seville, Ohio). Kilkenny’s attempt was blocked but Bisnott came up with the rebound and poked it past Onufer for the game-winning goal. The goal is Bisnott’s MAAC-leading seventh tally of the season and marked her third-straight game with at least one goal.

Niagara dominated possession, especially in the first half, where within a matter of a few minutes, Niagara hit two crossbars and a post. Niagara’s first good scoring opportunity came in the 7th minute when sophomore Aisha Eversley (Mississauga, Ont.) cracked a ball from 20 yards that RMU’s Onufer just managed to get a hand on, sending it off the crossbar. Less than a minute later, sophomore Chiara Greco (Hamilton, Ont.) ripped a shot from 25 yards out that ricocheted off the crossbar.

In all, the Purple Eagles attempted a season-high 27 shots, including 13 on frame. Bisnott alone had 10 of Niagara’s shots, including a strike in the 27th minute that hit the left post.

Niagara held Robert Morris to just 11 shots on the day, and gave up only a pair of corner kicks. Niagara’s keeper duo of sophomore Sarah Stephens (Toledo, Ohio) and freshman Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.) combined for the team’s second shutout this season. Stephens, who started the game in goal, recorded two saves, while Bowers made four stops in the second half.

"I thought defensively we did ok," Veltri said. "We didn’t give up any really good scoring opportunities, and I thought both keepers played well."

The match, which was broadcast by LCTV, will air Sunday at 7 p.m. on cable channel 20.

Niagara opens MAAC play on Oct. 5, when Iona visits Niagara Field for a 2:30 p.m. match
