NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women’s soccer team wraps up its four-game road trip this weekend with a pair of in-state opponents. The Purple Eagles take on Cornell on Friday at 5 p.m., before heading to St. Bonaventure for Sunday’s 1 p.m. match.
The duo of sophomore Sarah Stephens (Toledo, Ohio) and freshman Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.) have been solid between the posts for Niagara. The goalkeepers have split time in every game and helped Niagara post its first shutout in a 2-0 win at Detroit on Friday night.
Senior Brittany Bisnott (Brampton, Ont.) leads the MAAC in points (9) and goals (4). The senior striker is averaging 0.67 goals per game and tallied two goals and assisted on the game winner in Niagara’s 4-3 overtime victory at Buffalo. Meanwhile, junior Stephanie Gartley (Camlachie, Ont.) has picked up the pace recently, tallying three points in as many games. Gartley scored the game-winning goal in Niagara’s 2-1 victory over Binghamton and also assisted on Bisnotts’ game-winning goal at Detroit.
Cornell (3-3-0) was outscored 9-1 in its first two matches, both losses, this season but the Big Red has turned things around and enter Friday’s matchup on a two-game win streak. Cornell is led by freshman Lena Russomagno, who has five goals on 10 shots. Russomagno recorded a hat trick in Cornell’s 3-2 win over Lafayette and leads the team with 12 points. The two teams have met only once, with Niagara earning a 2-1 victory last season.
St. Bonaventure (3-2-1), which has outscored its opponents 11-6 on the season, is coming off a 2-0 win over St. Francis (Pa.). The Bonnies have received goals from seven different players, including multiple goals from a pair of freshmen. Anna Cunningham and Courtney Bosse are tied for the team lead with six points on two goals and two assists. The youth movement extends to the goalkeeper position as a pair of freshmen in Nicole Markert and Amanda Prestigiacomo, have combined for three shutouts this season. Niagara is 7-15-1 all-time against St. Bonaventure, including last season’s 3-2 win at Niagara Field.
