Women’s Soccer Blanks Detroit, 2-0

Brittany Bisnott

BERKLEY, Mich. – Strong play in the midfield and a solid defense proved to be a winning combination for the Niagara women’s soccer team, as it earned its second victory in as many games, defeating Detroit, 2-0, on Friday afternoon at Hurley Field. With the win, Niagara moves to 3-2 on the season, while the Titans fall to 0-5.

"We were the better team today," head coach Peter Veltri said. "We played well and kept possession of the ball and got the result we deserved."

Senior Brittany Bisnott (Brampton, Ont.) put the Purple Eagles up 1-0 in the 42nd minute off a pass from junior Stephanie Gartley (Camlachie, Ont.). Gartley found Bisnott near the top of the box and Niagara’s leading scorer made no mistake on the shot, beating Titan goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry. The tally, Bisnott’s fourth in five games, gives her nine points on the season, which leads the MAAC.

NU made it 2-0 in the 60th minute when sophomore Chiara Greco’s (Hamilton, Ont.) 25-yard shot found the back of the net. The goal was Greco’s second of the season, giving her five points on the year.

Niagara withstood a late offensive surge keeping the Titans off the scoreboard as freshman Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.) did not allow a goal.  Bowers played the first half, recording two saves to earn the clean sheet, while sophomore Sarah Stephens (Toledo, Ohio), who played the second half in goal for NU, posted a pair of saves to share the shutout.

Niagara travels to Mount Pleasant to face Central Michigan on Sunday at 1 p.m.
