Women’s Basketball Hangs On, Downs Siena in Overtime

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Senior guard Chantelle Wilson (Burlington, Ont.) equaled her career high with 19 points to lead the Niagara University women’s basketball team (12-10, 4-7 MAAC) to a 72-68 overtime victory over Siena College (5-16, 4-7 MAAC) Thursday night in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball action at the Gallagher Center.

Wilson, who also scored 19 points in an overtime victory earlier this season, scored five of her points in overtime to lead the Purple Eagles. Wilson drove the lane to give Niagara a 68-66 lead in the extra session. After Siena tied the score, junior guard Michelle Manfredi (Jefferson Hills, Pa.) sank two free throws with 40 seconds remaining for a 70-68 lead. Siena missed three three-point field goal attempts before Manfredi was fouled with 14.2 seconds left. She sank both foul shots for the 72-68 score.

Junior Sarah Wilson (St. Catharines, Ont.) came off the bench for 15 points and 10 rebounds. The performance was her third double-double of the season and fourth of her career. Senior Shaunna Ambrose (McKees Rocks, Pa.) had 14 points and a team-high five assists.

Siena was led by Laura Menty’s 27 points. Melissa Manzer and Shondaya Burrell added 14 and 11 points, respectively.

The Purple Eagles took a 16-15 lead after Chantelle Wilson sank a three-pointer with 12:50 to play. Siena responded with a 9-1 run for a 24-17 lead when Katelyn Dooley scored. Chantelle Wilson capped a 13-2 Niagara run with a three-pointer for a 30-26 lead with 3:09 left in the half. Menty scored six of Siena’s eight points in an 8-1 run to close the half with a 34-31 lead.

Niagara used an 11-0 run in the second half to pull away from a 39-39 tie. Freshman Jen McNamee (Oxford, Ohio) capped the run with a pair of free throws at 9:53. Menty tied the game at 55-55 after scoring six-straight points with four minutes remaining. Menty then scored with four seconds remaining to force overtime, tying the score at 61-61.

Niagara returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. when it hosts Loyola College at the Gallagher Center.
