Women's Soccer Drops Tough Game at Marist

Stephanie Gartley

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The women's soccer squad (9-6-2, 4-2-2 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but three seperate mistakes cost the Purple Eagles three-straight goals in a 3-1 loss at conference-leading Marist (9-4-3, 6-1-1 MAAC) on Friday.

Niagara now sits one point out of the final playoff spot with 13 points, however head coach Peter Veltri's crew can now prepare for a win-and-you're-in contest with Siena on Sunday.

"Tonight was a disappointing result because we played very, very well," Veltri said. "We just simply made three mistakes and Marist capitalized on all of them. It's a shame to lose a game like that."

Niagara out-performed the Red Foxes in every aspect of the contest but the one that mattered. The Purple Eagles took the lead just before halftime on a nice play by senior Natalie Frost (Elmira, N.Y.). The defender attempted to cross the ball to junior Stephanie Gartley (Calamachie, Ont.), and the forward finished the play with her sixth goal of the season. Freshman Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.) made four saves in the loss.
