Saint Peter's eliminates Niagara in a heartbreaker, 2-1

John Fiutowski

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The Niagara University Men’s Soccer team took a second half lead but couldn’t hold on as they were eliminated from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament after a 2-1 overtime loss to second-seeded Saint Peter’s in the quarterfinals.

The first half of the game was action packed, even though Niagara was outshot 11-3. Niagara’s John Fiutowski (Ottawa, Ont.) made 4 of his 7 saves to keep the score tied at zero going into the half.

The second half saw Niagara strike first, as Matthew Durand (Melbourne, Australia) scored off of a free kick to give Niagara the commanding 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute. Seventeen minutes later, Saint Peter’s would score via an unassisted goal by Murphy Wiredu. Despite being outshot 18-6, Niagara was able to get the game into overtime.

Nearly seven minutes into overtime, Udi Naim took a pass from Chris DeAbreu and then put it into the left corner of the net, ending Niagara’s season.

Durand ended the season strongly as he scored three goals during the two MAAC tournament games he played in this year. Niagara ends the season with a 6-11-2 mark and a 3-5-1 mark in the MAAC.
