NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women’s soccer team (6-5-0, 1-1 in MAAC) will look to get back in the win column when it travels to Jersey City, N.J., to face Saint Peter’s on Friday afternoon. The Purple Eagles will also take on Manhattan on Sunday morning in Riverdale, N.Y.
Niagara had its three-game win streak snapped on Sunday, when Fairfield handed the Purple Eagles their worst loss in more than three years. The Stags scored six goals in Sunday’s win, the most Niagara has allowed since a 6-4 loss at Detroit on Sept. 17, 2004.
Niagara opened conference play with a 2-1 victory over Iona, in a game that saw sophomore Michelle Emery (Colorado Springs, Colo.) notch her first career goal. Emery’s game-winning tally came at the 51:24 mark when the midfielder ran at the Gael’s defense and unloaded a shot from just inside the penalty box. Her left-footed strike dipped under the crossbar and into the upper left corner of the net.
Meanwhile, senior Brittany Bisnott (Brampton, Ont.) continues to inch closer to the top of NU’s record books. Bisnott picked up her league-leading eighth goal of the season in Niagara’s win over Iona last weekend, giving her 57 goals in her career. Bisnott currently sits third on NU’s all-time goals list and with her latest tally, she moved into sole possession of third place on Niagara’s career points list with 127.
Junior Stephanie Gartley (Camlachie, Ont.) has also notched her name in the record books. Gartley sits fifth in goals with 33 and moved into a tie for eighth on Niagara’s all-time assists charts with 15.
In goal, Niagara continues to split time between sophomore Sarah Stephens (Toledo, Ohio) and freshman Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.). On the season, Bowers has made 30 saves and boasts a 1.78 GAA, while Stephens has stopped 20 shots and owns a 2.00 GAA.
Saint Peter’s (1-9-0, 0-2-0 in MAAC) has struggled on offense this season, scoring only four goals in 10 games. The Peahens lone win was a 2-0 victory over Delaware State on Sept. 30. Kyle Marsh leads the team with two goals, while Katelyn Matousek and Erica DeMedici have chipped in a goal apiece. Niagara defeated Saint Peter’s, 5-0, in 2006, and the Purple Eagles are 9-5-0 all-time against the Peahens.
Manhattan (4-3-4, 1-0-1 in MAAC) is undefeated in conference play and is in the middle of a five game unbeaten streak. The Jaspers have posted three wins and two ties during the streak and have not conceded a goal since a 1-0 loss to Drexel on Sept. 16. Goalkeeper Alicia DeFino, who has named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week for the last three weeks, has held opponents scoreless for a school record 504:52 minutes. Manhattan is led in scoring by Christine Reina with 14 points on six goals and two assists. The Jaspers are 4-8-3 all-time versus Niagara, including last years 2-1 loss on Oct. 1.
