JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Four different Purple Eagles found the back of the net as the Niagara women’s soccer team (7-5-0, 2-1) picked up its second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win with a 4-0 victory over Saint Peter’s (1-11, 0-3) Friday afternoon in Jersey City, N.J.
"We wanted to rebound after a poor showing from our last game," head coach Peter Veltri said. "I thought the girls came in with a good attitude and got on top of Saint Peter’s early. Hopefully we can carry this momentum into the remainder of our MAAC games."
Niagara dominated play and held the Peahens to just nine shots all afternoon. In all, 19 Purple Eagles saw action in a game where Niagara dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities.
Junior Shaylyn Lawrence (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) opened the scoring at the 7:59 mark. Freshman Caitlin Long (Tonawanda, N.Y.) sent a ball between two defenders that Lawrence ran onto from the right flank and slotted into the lower left corner of the net. Lawrence’s game-winning goal was her first of the season and marked Niagara’s fastest goal this year.
NU doubled its lead when freshman Kathryn Potter (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) found the back of the net off a feed from senior Brittany Bisnott (Brampton, Ont.). Bisnott found Potter streaking down the right flank and sent a through ball that Potter ran on to and buried in the back of the net. The goal was Potter’s first in a Purple Eagle uniform.
Junior Stephanie Gartley (Camlachie, Ont.) recorded her third goal of the season just before half time. Freshman Caitlyn Kilkenny (Seville, Ohio) received a ball with her back to goal, turned and led Gartley with a pass. Gartley collected the ball and ripped a shot from 20 yards out that beat the Peahens’ Reanna Gibbs.
Bisnott recorded Niagara’s fourth and final goal in the 55th minute when she received a pass behind the Saint Peter’s defense from freshman Emily McElroy (Liverpool, N.Y.). With just Gibbs to contend with, Bisnott touched the ball past the charging goalkeeper and slotted it into the back of the net for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Niagara is back in action Sunday, when they face Manhattan in a 10 a.m. game Sunday morning in Riverdale, N.Y.
