Men’s Soccer Wins MAAC Opener

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Senior Matt Stedman (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) scored his first game-winning goal as the Niagara University men’s soccer team (3-5-0, 1-0-0) won its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener with a 2-1 double overtime victory over Saint Peter’s College (2-5-2, 0-1-0) Friday afternoon in Jersey City.

With only 10 players, senior Kwame Oduro (Toronto, Ont.) passed through a defender to Stedman for the game winner in the 107th minute. Stedman’s goal was his fifth of the season.

"This was a great win four team on the road against a verg good Saint Peter’s team," Niagara head coach Dermot McGrane said. "It was an important win. The team showed a great amont of character playing with only 10 men and pulling out the win."

Saint Peter’s took a 1-0 lead in the in the first half when Niagara failed to clear the ball in front of the net and Marco Orias scored from the back post in the 25th minute.

Niagara tied the game in the second half when Stedman was fouled in the box and senior Rafael Venturini (Victoria, Brazil) scored his second of the year on a penalty kick in the 67th minute.

Freshman John Fiutowski (Oshawa, Ont.) picked up his second win of the season, making seven saves. Matt Lawlor had three saves for the Peacocks.

Niagara returns to action Sunday at 10 a.m. when it takes on Manhattan College.
