Purple Eagles Beat Bonnies, 3-1

Kwame Oduro

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Three Purple Eagles all scored their first goals of the season to help the Niagara University men’s soccer team (2-4) beat Little Three rival St. Bonaventure (0-7), 3-1, Wednesday night at McGraw-Jennings Field.

"It was a tough game for the players," Niagara head coach Dermot McGrane said. "They battled for the win and the key difference was when the ball was in front of the net, we put it away."

Senior Kwame Oduro (Toronto, Ont.) scored 36 seconds into the game when he beat Bonnies’ keeper Massimo Marchese-Collu from 20 yards out.

Niagara made it 2-0 in the 19th minute when senior Matt Stedman (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) sent a pass in front of the net and sophomore Stephen Kauble (Canal Winchester, Ohio) scored on the back side of the post.

It was 3-0 when senior Rafael Venturini (Victoria, Brazil) scored on a free kick.

St. Bonaventure prevented Purple Eagle freshman John Fiutowski (Ottawa, Ont.) from his first collegiate shutout when Nikola Vasilev scored on a loose ball in front of the net in the 37th minute.

Fiutowski and Marchese-Collu each made three saves.

Niagara returns to action Sunday when it hosts Duquesne at 1:30 p.m. at Niagara Field.
