Manhattan Second-Half Run Downs Niagara, 73-46

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Manhattan College opened the second half with a 13-1 run and the Jaspers rolled to a 73-46 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball victory over Niagara University Sunday afternoon at the Gallagher Center.

Niagara, 3-18, 2-10 MAAC, made only three of 20 second-half field goal attempts. Manhattan, 8-13, 5-7, was led by Joann Nwafili’s 15 points. Kelly Regan added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Jaspers. Caitlin Flood (11), Lupe Godinez (10 and Larie Dew (10) also scored in double figures.

Niagara was led by junior guard Chantelle Wilson (Burlington, Ont.) as she had 12 points, nine coming in the first half. Wilson made Niagara’s first second-half field goal when she sank a three-pointer from the corner with 9:13 remaining.

Niagara trailed 9-0 to open the game before Wilson sank a three-pointer to break the scoring drought. She started a 9-0 run to end the half for the Purple Eagles with a three-pointer from the baseline corner. Toni Smalley (Thornville, Ohio) and Danie Mosca (Baltimore, Md.) added three-pointers to cap the Niagara run and bring the Purple Eagles within three, 31-28, at halftime. The Purple Eagles made five of nine three-point field goal attempts in the first 20 minutes.

Senior Jessica Turner (West Seneca/Mount Mercy Academy) had a career-high three points for Niagara.

The Purple Eagles play Saint Peter’s Friday at the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City, N.J.

  • Ashley Cornett had a season-high two rebounds, tying her career high.
  • Jessica Turner had a career-high three free throws in today’s game.
