ELMA, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s soccer team (7-5-4, 5-1-3) had its nine-game unbeaten streak snapped Sunday afternoon when it lost 2-0 to No. 24 Fairfield University (12-5-1, 7-2-0) at Sahlen’s Sports Park.
With the loss and a win by Saint Peter’s College over Loyola College, the Purple Eagles will be the No. 2 seed in next weekend’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament in Fairfield, Conn.
Alex Cunliffe scored both of the Stags’ goals. He gave them a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute when he got a through pass from Tom Clements and beat Niagara keeper John Fiutowski (Ottawa, Ont.) on the back post.
Fairfield took a 2-0 lead in the 70th minute when Cunliffe scored on a free kick.
Fiutowski made three saves and the Stags’ Jon Paul Francini made four.
Niagara meets Saint Peter’s in the first MAAC semifinal game on Nov. 2 at 4 p.m.
