Men’s Soccer Ties Iona 1-1 in Double Overtime

Senior Brian Leonard

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Senior Brian Leonard’s (Sarnia, Ont.) first goal of the season helped the Niagara University men’s soccer team (7-5-4, 5-0-3) earn a 1-1 double overtime tie with Iona College (6-6-5, 3-3-2) Friday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Niagara Field. The tie also keeps the Purple Eagles conference titles alive.

Niagara trailed 1-0 at halftime after Fernando Liserra scored on a give-and-go play from Nicholas Smaldone in the 33rd minute.

Leonard tallied just his second collegiate goal in the 74th minute when he headed in a throw-in pass from sophomore Billy Gustafson (Rochester, N.Y.).

Niagara freshman John Fiutowski (Ottawa, Ont.) made four saves while Iona’s Nils Binstock had three.

The Purple Eagles currently tied with Fairfield University with 18 points. The Stags take on Canisius College tonight at 7 p.m. Niagara and Fairfield meet at 1 p.m. Sunday in the final regular-season game at Niagara Field.
