NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s soccer team (7-5-3, 5-0-2) controls its own postseason destiny this weekend when its hosts Iona College (6-6-4, 3-3-1) Friday at 3 p.m. and Fairfield University (11-4-1, 6-1-0) Sunday at 1 p.m. at Niagara Field.
Currently in second place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings with 17 points, the Purple Eagles could secure the top seed in the upcoming league championship with a pair of victories. The Stags are in first place with 18 points and they play Canisius College Friday.
ECAC Offensive Player of the Week and MAAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week Kwame Oduro (Toronto, Ont.) has a team-leading seven goals and is second in points (15). Classmate Matt Stedman (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) tops the squad with 16 points on six goals and four assists. Sophomore Stephen Kauble (Canal Winchester, Ohio) has a team-leading five assists and is third in scoring with seven points.
In net, freshman John Fiutowski (Ottawa, Ont.) has a 1.12 goals-against average, .810 save percentage and 6-2-3 record with two shutouts.
Iona was won its last two games, including a 3-0 victory over Loyola last weekend. The Gaels are led by Maciek Sliwinski with 14 points on seven goals. Nicholas Smaldone has four goals and a team-best three assists. In net, Nils Binstock has started 12 of 16 games and has a 1.44 goals-against average and .680 save percentage.
Fairfield has won three of its last four games, with its lone loss coming to Loyola, 1-0, last weekend. The Stags, who are ranked No. 2 in the recent NSCAA/adidas North Atlantic regional rankings, are led by Alex Cunliffe with seven goals and 16 points. Paul McQuade is second in scoring with three goals and a team-leading six assists for 12 points. In net, Jon Paul Francini has a 0.85 goals-against average and .816 save percentage.
In the all-time series, Niagara and Iona are tied at 8-8-0, and the Purple Eagles will be looking for their first win over the Stags in 17 games.
