NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s soccer team (5-5-2) played to a 2-2 double-overtime tie with the University of Buffalo (8-5-2) Sunday at Niagara Field.

The Purple Eagles led 2-0 with less than 14 minutes to play in the second half before the Bulls erupted for two unanswered goals coming 1:14 apart to force the tie.

The best chance in overtime for either team to win came with 4:20 left in the second overtime when UB’s Lee Catchpole missed a penalty kick wide.

The Purple Eagles, who are now unbeaten in their last five games with a 3-0-2 mark, opened the scoring with a goal by senior forward Kwame Oduro (Toronto, Ont.) that developed from a give-and-go with dual assists on the play going to senior forward Matt Stedman (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) and sophomore midfielder Stephen Kauble (Canal Winchester, Ohio) in the 29th minute. The Purple Eagles padded their lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute when sophomore back Billy Gustafson (Rochester, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the season on a kick from 45-yards out which came unassisted.

The Bulls increased their offensive pressure which resulted in two unassisted goals. The first one came from senior forward Andrae Clarke in the 76th minute before Catchpole knotted the score 2-2 by heading in a goal in the 77th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper John Fiutowski (Ottawa, Ont.) played all 110 minutes for the Purple Eagles and made seven saves.

Niagara returns to play on Tuesday when it travels to Canisius for a 7 p.m. contest. That game was rescheduled from Oct. 13 due to the inclement weather that struck the Western New York region.
