LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Siena’s Laura Menty scored a game-high 19 points to help Siena College to a 79-44 victory over Niagara University Thursday evening in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball game at the Alumni Recreation Center.
Menty, who was named the 2005 MAAC Rookie of the Year, and Shandaya Burrell, who added 17 points off the bench, were the only players scoring in double figures for either team. Juniors Toni Smalley (Thornville, Ohio) and Chantelle Wilson (Burlington, Ont.), along with sophomores Sarah Wilson (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Sara Prybyl (Pittsburgh, Pa.) all had seven points for Niagara.
Sarah Wilson blocked two shots and was one of three players to lead Niagara with three rebounds.
Siena took a 10-point lead in the first half with a 19-9 run capped by a layup by Lauren Surber. The Saints then put the game out of reach, scoring 12 of the next 17 points to take a 36-19 halftime lead.
In the second half, Siena opened with a 7-0 run to take a 43-19 lead. The Saints continued their offensive display, pushing the lead to 39 points, 76-37, on a three-point field goal by Bola Akinkuotu with 2:14 remaining. The Purple Eagles closed the game with a 7-3 run. Prybyl capped the run with a pair of free throws with one second left.
Niagara is off until Feb. 3 when it plays Loyola (Md.) in the Gallagher Center.
