NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s golf team posted a team score of 301 Friday in the first round of the 54-hole jetBlue Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship at the Magnolia Golf Course at Walt Disney World. Led by freshman Mike Jarvis (Athol Springs, N.Y.), the Purple Eagles stand in fourth place, 14 strokes behind the tournament-leading Loyola College.
Jarvis, playing in only the second event of his career, stands tied for seventh overall after shooting a 1-over 73. Jarvis made his collegiate debut in the Lafayette Invitational, April 8-9, registering a 79-78=157 to place 43rd. He had missed the fall season due to a back injury.Three Purple Eagles stand tied for 12th overall with a 4-over 76. Junior Chris Hart (Ithaca, N.Y.) shot a team-low 35 on the front nine, followed by a 41 on the back.
Tied with Hart is junior Andrew Burke (Rochester, N.Y.), who is coming off a career-best second-place finish at the Cape May Invitational April 16-17, helped by a career-low 71 on the second day. Burke recorded back-to-back 38’s in today’s round.
Junior Chris Agostinelli (Rochester, N.Y.), who led Niagara at the 2004 MAAC Championship with a second-place finish, posted an even-par 36 on the front nine, followed by a 40 on the back.
Sophomore Dan Misko (Grand Island, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for Niagara, posting a 42-45=87.
Loyola College leads the tournament with a team score of 287, followed by Siena (292) and Rider (293). Siena’s Bryan Bigley stands as the leading scorer with a 66, followed by three Loyola teammates and a Rider freshman tied at 70.
Day two of the three-day tournament begins tomorrow with a 6:52 a.m. tee-off time.
