Women’s Basketball Ends Road Swing with a Loss at Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Niagara University women’s basketball team (1-10) ended its brutal six-game road swing with an 80-56 loss at the University of Vermont (4-6) Saturday afternoon in Patrick Gym.

The Catamounts led the entire game and shot 53.6 percent (30-56) from the field, including 83.3 percent (5-6) from three-point range, and outrebounded the Purple Eagles, 44-27.

Niagara was led by junior Shaunna Ambrose (McKees Rock, Pa.) with 14 points. Junior Jessi Tomasin (Hamilton, Ont.) had 11 points off the bench and sophomore Michelle Manfredi (Jefferson Hills, Pa.) added a team-high five rebounds.

Vermont jumped out to 12-0 lead to start the game, pushed the score to 20-5 at the 12:34 mark of the first half and held a 43-24 advantage at the break.

Niagara shot better in the second half, hitting 40 percent (10-25) of its shots, but Vermont was able to maintain its double-digit lead for the rest of the game.

The Purple Eagles resume Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play Jan. 5 when it hosts Marist College at 7 p.m. in the legendary Taps Gallagher Center.
