HAMILTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Sara Prybyl (Pittsburgh, Pa.) came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Niagara University women’s basketball team (1-9) dropped a 75-47 decision to Colgate University (2-8) Wednesday evening on Cottrell Court.
Prybyl sank a personal-best five free throws in 18 minutes off the bench. Freshman Erika Harris (Gahanna, Ohio) scored a career-high nine points, while senior Jennifer Roueche (Niwot, Colo.) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Niagara opened the game with a 6-0 run, but Colgate went on a 16-2 run, highlighted by four three-pointers, to take a 32-18 lead with 4:10 left in the half. The Purple Eagles trailed 38-24 at halftime after shooting just 29.6 percent from the field in the period. Meanwhile, the Red Raiders connected on 51.9 percent of their shots, including 66.7 percent from three-point range.
In the second half, Niagara made it a 13-point game after going basket-for-basket with Colgate until junior Shaunna Ambrose (McKees Rock, Pa.) connected on her second three-pointer of the game to make it 44-31 with 16:43 left. The Red Raiders responded with a 9-2 run to take a 20-point lead. They led by 18-or-more points for the rest of the game.
Niagara returns to action Saturday when it travels to Vermont for a 1 p.m. game in Patrick Gym.
