ORLANDO – Despite posting the program’s best record in school history (16-3-2), the Niagara University women’s soccer team had its season ended when it lost 2-1 to Fairfield University Monday afternoon in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship at Hess Sports Field at the Disney Wide World of Sports.
"This was a great year. Obviously, we are disappointed," head coach Peter Veltri said. "We played hard but Fairfield player harder. They were able to capitalize on our mistakes and made the most of them."
The Stags scored the game-winning goal in the 59th minute when Ahana Johnson slide a shot past senior Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.) into the far left corner.
Niagara took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute of the game when freshman Caitlin Long (Fort Collins, Colo.) scored her fourth goal of the season and first of the tournament when she received a crossing pass from sophomore Christina Langrell (Tillinsburg, Ont.) and headed the ball past Fairfield’s goalkeeper Brett Maron.
Fairfield tied the game when Alex Caram sent the ball in on a set play to Janna Breitenwischer who put a dribbling header into the far right of the net in the 35 minute mark.
Juniors Emily Montgomery (Oshawa, Ont.) and Jenna Sporta (Oakville, Ont.), along with freshman Stephanie Gartley (Sarnia, Ont.), were named to the MAAC All-Tournament team.
