NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Marist used the one-two punch of Fifi Camara and Megan Vetter to hand Niagara a 61-49 loss in a battle of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference heavyweights Sunday afternoon at the Gallagher Center. Following the contest, Niagara and Marist are tied for the conference lead with 7-3 records.
Marist used a three-point field goal by Vetter to take a 44-29 lead immediately after halftime and never let Niagara closer than 10 points for the rest of the game. Niagara came within 10 points, 51-41, after a 5-0 run but Marist scored the game’s next six points to stay in command.
Niagara, now 12-7 overall, was led by senior guard Eva Cunningham (East Aurora/Iroquois) with 17 points, four assists and four steals.
Kristin Keller added 12 points for the Red Foxes, now 13-6 overall and winners of seven-straight games. Camara added a game-high 14 rebounds.
Marist used 11 points by Camara and nine from Vetter to pull out to a 41-29 halftime lead. The Red Foxes, who made five three-point field goals in the first 20 minutes, used a 9-2 run to take a 22-10 lead. In addition to making 16 of its 28 field-goal attempts, Marist also had a 17-10 rebounding advantage.
The Purple Eagles shot 38.5 percent (20 of 52) from the field and made only three three-pointers, tying their season low for one game.
Niagara will play at Canisius Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Koessler Center.
