BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Four players scored in double figures to help Fairfield University (8-16, 6-8) beat Niagara University (16-8, 10-5), 80-68, Monday evening in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball game at Bridgeport Arena at Harbor Yard.
Janelle McManus scored a team-high 16 points for the Stags, and Candice Lindsay, Cathy Dash and Schrene Isidora tallied 15, 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Niagara senior Colleen Toetz (Parma, Ohio) led Niagara with a game-high 22 points. It was her 11th 20-plus point game of the season. Also in double figures was freshman Jessi Tomasin (Hamilton, Ont.) with a career-high 14 points and senior Jessica Kemp (Niagara Falls, Ont.) with 11 points.
After trailing 32-28 at halftime, Fairfield put together an 18-9 run over a 6:04 span to take its largest lead of the game, 55-39.
Niagara responded with a 16-9 run to pull within six points, 61-55. Toetz scored 10 of her 18 second-half points, including a pair of three-pointers, during the run. Tomasin sank a three-pointer at 4:19, but that was as close as the Purple Eagles would get the rest of the game.
Fairfield out-scored Niagara 17-13 over the final seven minutes with the Stags making 15 free throws. They finished the game making 24 of 32 from the foul line and Niagara made only 7 of 13. The Purple Eagles shot 45.6 percent from the field, but were out-rebounded, 46-27, including 24-12 on the offensive boards.
Niagara returns to action Friday when it hosts Loyola at 7 p.m. in the Gallagher Center.
