RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s basketball team (12-7, 6-4) snapped a five-game losing streak at Manhattan College (8-11, 4-6) Sunday when it destroyed the Jaspers, 71-41, in Draddy Gym.
Senior Colleen Toetz (Parma, Ohio) scored a game-high 22 points. She was 7 of 9 from the field, 3 of 4 from the three-point arc and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line. The guard had had four assists and four steals. Classmate Ann Mimm (Girard, Pa.) netted 19 points and senior Jessica Kemp (Niagara Falls, Ont.) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
Niagara led 41-20 at halftime and shot 56 percent from the field, 62.5 percent from three-point range and 80 percent from the charity stripe. Niagara led most of the half, but with a Donnette Reed layup, Manhattan came within one point at the 12:45 mark, marking the closest the Lady Jaspers would get the remainder of the games. Toetz tallied 18 first-half points.
The Purple Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 run in the beginning of the second half, expanding their lead to, 48-21. With a Shaunna Ambrose (McKees Rock, Pa.) jumper, Niagara recorded its largest lead of the game, 67-36 at the 3:46 mark.
All 12 Purple Eagles played and all but three played five-or-more minutes. Niagara held Manhattan to 27.3 percent from the field, forced 23 turnovers and had 16 steals.
Niagara returns to action Friday when it hosts Marist at 7 p.m. in the Gallagher Center.
