Niagara Erupts For 99 Points In Win


Freshman Michelle Manfredi posted her first collegiate double-double in Niagara's win Tuesday.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – With five players scoring in double figures, the Niagara University women’s basketball team scored a season-best 99 points in its 99-76 non-conference win over Colgate at the Gallagher Center.

The Purple Eagles, now 6-4 this season, sank seven three-point field goals in the first half as they rolled out to a 59-31 lead at the half. After Colgate took a 13-11 lead, the Purple Eagles went on a 20-2 run to pull away.

Niagara’s 59 first-half points were the most since it scored 52 points in an 83-76 win over St. Bonaventure on Dec. 11, 2002. The last time Niagara had five-or-more players score in double figures came in an 86-79 victory over Rider on Feb. 22, 2004.

Colgate, which falls to 3-8, opened the second half with a 22-9 run to cut the Niagara lead to 15 points, 68-53. Niagara responded with a 11-0 run, led by two three-point field goals by sophomore Jessica Tomasin (Hamilton, Ont.).

Senior guard Eva Cunningham (East Aurora/Iroquois) led the way for Niagara with a game-high 23 points. The outing was her fourth game with 20-or-more points this season and 13th in her career. She also recorded nine assists and two steals. Cunningham sank all six of her foul shots to move into third all-time at Niagara with 341 made free throws.

Sophomore Chantelle Wilson (Burlington, Ont.) netted 17 points as she tied a career high by making five three-point field goals. Sophomore Shaunna Ambrose (McKees Rock, Pa.) scored 16 points, all in the first half, to go with career-high totals in assists (9) and steals (4). Tomasin scored 15 points in a reserve role, sinking four three-pointers.

Freshman Michelle Manfredi (Jefferson Hills, Pa.) posted her first collegiate double-double as she recorded 13 points and 13 rebounds, both career highs.

Niagara, which was credited with a season-best 27 assists in the game, plays Friday at Army in a 1 p.m. contest.
