NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Ending a three-game winning streak, the Niagara University women’s soccer team (6-4-0, 1-1-0) fell to Siena College (5-7-0, 2-1-0), 1-0, Friday at Niagara Field. The loss drops the Purple Eagles record to 1-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
Despite outshooting the Saints, 11-9, in the contest, Niagara could not overcome a first-half goal by Siena midfielder Alicia Lackey. Lackey controlled the pass, taking the ball at Purple Eagles goalkeeper Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.) and hitting a shot into the lower-left corner of the net. Lackey got behind the Niagara defense following the turnover, making a timing route to receive the pass from Helf.
Throughout the second half the Purple Eagles carried the attack to the Saints, however were only able took three shots, as most attacks were cutoff by Saints goalkeeper Noel Cox in the Siena penalty box.
The Purple Eagles’ best scoring opportunity, later ruled to be offsides, came in the 64th minute, as sophomore midfielder Emily Montgomery (Oshawa, Ont.) headed a cross just wide of the Siena net.
