NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Junior Paul VandenBoomen’s (Victoria, B.C.) goal in the 101st minute of double overtime lifted the Niagara University men’s soccer team (4-12-2, 2-5-2) to a 2-1 victory over Rider University (3-13-0, 3-4-0) Sunday at Niagara Field on the Monteagle Ridge campus.
VandenBoomen scored his first goal of the season on a give-and-go from sophomore Joe Conjerti (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport). The 6-foot-3 defender tucked the ball in past Daniel Riverso for his second career game-winning goal.
Niagara scored first when senior Simon Adair (Oakville, Ont.) scored his fourth goal of the season in the 77th minute. Sophomore Matt Stedman (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) crossed the ball from left to right and Adair put a redirected header by a scrabbling Riverso.
Rider tied the game and forced overtime when Dylan Matlack converted on a scrabble in front of the net off a free kick. Christopher Trump picked up the assist on the cross.
Junior Eric Sullivan picked up his fourth win of the season, making seven saves. Riverso also made seven saves. Rider had the advantage in shots, 17-15.
Adair and fellow seniors Dan O’Shea (East Syracuse, N.Y.) and Andrew Johnson (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois Central) all played their final game at Niagara Field.
