NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Freshman forward Brittany Bisnott (Brampton, Ont.) notched her second-career hat trick, leading the Niagara University women’s soccer team (7-4-0, 2-1-0) to a 5-1 win over Marist College (3-11-0, 1-3-0) Sunday at Niagara Field.
Leading the Purple Eagles in scoring this season, Bisnott scored her 11th, 12th and 13th goals of the season in the win over the Red Foxes.
"After I missed the first two shots I got my head into it and decided that I wanted to score," Bisnott said. "It feels better to score because it’s a MAAC game."
Prior to scoring her first goal of the contest, Bisnott missed two one-on-one opportunities with Marist goalkeeper Liz Herber.
In the 33rd minute, Bisnott controlled a cross by sophomore Amanda Wade (Rochester, N.Y.) and turned on the Red Foxes defense, hitting a low shot into the left corner.
Four minutes following Bisnott’s first goal, sophomore midfielder Emily Montgomery (Oshawa, Ont.) followed-up her own shot, and was able to hit a high shot over Herber to score her fifth goal of the season.
Marist would score their lone goal of the contest in the 40th minute when sophomore forward Justine Caccamo chipped a one-on-one opportunity over Niagara junior goalkeeper Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.). Caccamo got behind the Purple Eagles defense on a through-ball by senior Courtney Moore.
In the second half, junior Brittany Younglove (Red Creek, N.Y.) took advantage of a mishandle by Marist goalkeeper Danielle Cibelli, who replaced Herber at halftime. After Niagara senior midfielder Lora te Boekhorst’s (Dundas, Ont.) cross was mishandled by Cibelli, Younglove sprinted in unmarked to finish the loose ball in the 63rd minute.
Bisnott closed the game with goals in the 68th and 82nd minute. In the 68th minute, Montgomery found a cutting Bisnott, who was able to hit a low shot past Cibelli to capitalize on the one-on-one scoring chance.
"We started off the game slow today, but we picked up some momentum late in the first half," Niagara head coach Peter Veltri said. "We carried it over to the second half and were able to capitalize on some opportunities. As long as we can capitalize on our opportunites, we should have a successful season."
Marist outshot the Purple Eagles, 26-24, in the contest, including taking 12 corner kicks in comparison to just two by Niagara.
Owings made four saves to pick up her sixth win of the season. Herber and Cibelli combined for eight saves in the loss.
