NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s soccer team (6-3-0) extended its winning streak to three games, defeating the University at Buffalo (3-8-0), 3-1, Friday at Niagara Field. Freshman forward Brittany Bisnott (Brampton, Ont.) scored two goals to lead the Purple Eagles.
Scoring four goals and adding an assist in the last two contests, Bisnott scored the game-winning goal for Niagara in the second consecutive game.
Off a leading-punt by senior goalkeeper Melissa Himes (Fulton, N.Y.), Bisnott outran two Buffalo defenders to control the ball in the Buffalo half, taking the ball down the left flank at Bulls goalkeeper Anna-Lesa Calvert. On the break, Bisnott slid the ball to the right of Calvert and into the right corner of the net in the 23rd minute, scoring the game-winner for the Purple Eagles.
Moving its record against non-conference opponents to 5-3-0, Niagara head coach Peter Veltri was proud of his team’s effort as it enters Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play next week.
"We played well in all three aspects of the game," Veltri said. "As a team, we’re going into the conference season feeling good about our play. Hopefully we can continue to improve as we go deeper in the season."
Niagara took an early lead following a goal by junior forward Brittany Younglove (Red Creek, N.Y.), who scored in her second-straight game. Beating two Bulls defenders off the dribble, Younglove slotted the ball to the right of Calvert and into the left side-net of the goal in the 11th minute, scoring her fifth goal of the season.
Following Younglove’s and Bisnott’s first-half goals, the Purple Eagles maintained the two-goal lead until late in the second half, due to tremendous team defense, as the Bulls outshot Niagara, 26-13, in the game.
In the 89th minute, Buffalo freshman Heidi Griffiths’ followed-up shot cut the Bulls’ deficit to a goal with a little over a minute remaining in regulation.
Niagara, despite allowing a late goal, continued on the attack, as junior Kelly Flaherty (Hastings, N.Y.) found a cutting Bisnott with less than 20 seconds remaining in regulation. On a one-on-one break, Bisnott beat Calvert with a low shot into the left corner of the net, scoring her 10th goal of the season with only three seconds left on the clock. With the late goal, Bisnott tallied her 21st point of the season, taking the overall lead in the MAAC in points.
Both Himes and junior goalkeeper Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.) saw action in the two-goal victory, both making four saves. Calvert made three saves for Buffalo in the loss.
