NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Senior Tanesha Seaton turned in a double-double to help Saint Peter’s College (7-5, 2-1) defeat Niagara University (7-5, 1-2), 63-56, Friday afternoon in a women’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at the Gallagher Center on the Niagara University campus.
The Peahens’ center had 16 points and 11 rebounds. After being held to six points in the first half, Seaton scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds in the final period.
After trailing 30-26 after the opening half, Saint Peter’s used an 11-5 run over the first 6:19 to take the lead for good. Niagara came within one point, 39-38, at the 13:35 mark, but the Peahens built a six-point lead, 46-40, with a 7-2 run.
The Purple Eagles then worked the score down to three points, 59-56, with 51 seconds left. Senior Colleen Toetz (Parma, Ohio/Regina) hit a jumper and freshman Chantelle Wilson (Burlington, Ont./M.M. Robinson) followed with a pair of free throws.
Seaton sank a jumper with 24 second left to give Saint Peter’s a 61-56 lead. Junior Eva Cunningham (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) missed a three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining and Khalisha Lewis tallied the Peahens’ final basket with four second left in the game.
Toetz had game- and team-highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds for Niagara. It was Toetz’s first career double-double and a career high in rebounds. Senior Jessica Kemp (Niagara Falls, Ont./A. N. Myer) added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Saint Peter’s shot 42.6 percent from the field, including 50 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from beyond the three-point arc in the second half. Niagara shot 36.8 percent and a season-low 46.2 percent from the free-throw line.
Niagara’s loss in the Gallagher Center ended the Purple Eagle’s 16-game home winning streak, the eighth-longest in the country.
The Purple Eagles return to action Sunday when they host Fairfield at 7 p.m. in the Gallagher Center.
