Senior Jessica Kemp scored a team-high 20 points vs. Marist |
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- The Niagara University women’s basketball team (2-2,1-1) struggled to find the basket this afternoon by shooting only 29 percent in its 61-51 loss to Marist (3-2, 2-0) at the McCann Center on the campus of Marist College.
"When you shoot 29 percent, you can’t win much," head coach Bill Agronin said. "We played poorly and shot poorly. Jessica Kemp kept us in the game."
Senior Jessica Kemp (Niagara Falls, Ont./A.N. Myer) led Niagara scorers with 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Senior Colleen Toetz (Parma, Ohio/Regina) added 12 points and three assists. Niagara starters shot just 23.7 percent (14 for 59) for the game, including 4 for 23 from three-point range.
The Purple Eagles jumped out to a 10-point lead with 2:34 remaining in the first half, but the Red Fox closed out the half on an 8-0 run to trim Niagara’s lead to 29-27. Niagara continued its shooting woes in the second half as it could only produce 22 points on 24 percent shooting. Marist took the lead for good when Laura Whtiney hit a three-pointer to put the Red Foxes up by three with 13 minutes remaining. Marist would never trail closing the stanza outscoring Niagara, 18-11.
Steph Del Preore led Marist scorers with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Niagara returns to action Dec. 13 when it hosts Buffalo at the Gallagher Center at 5 p.m.
