Cunningham, Toetz Power Niagara to 91-76 Win


Senior Sarah Heben posted her first double-double of the season in a win over Cleveland State Tuesday night.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The one-two punch of junior Eva Cunningham and senior Colleen Toetz combined for 53 points to lead the Niagara women’s basketball team (1-1) to a 91-76 non-conference victory over Cleveland State Tuesday night at the Gallagher Center.

Cunningham (East Aurora/Iroquois) scored a team-high 27 points and added a team-high seven assists while Toetz (Parma, Ohio) had a career-high 26 points.

Cleveland State’s Maria Rickards scored a career- and game-high 33 points to lead the Vikings (1-4).

The Purple Eagles made their first six three-point field goals as Cunningham and Toetz each made two. Niagara opened a 23-8 lead at 12:27 on a Toetz three-pointer. Toetz’s third three-point field goal of the half gave Niagara a 49-32 lead, its largest of the first half with 49 seconds remaining.

Cleveland State used a 13-5 lead to open the second half to cut the lead to nine points, 54-45, before Niagara scored five-straight points and kept the lead in double digits for the rest of the game.

Niagara enjoyed a 41-30 rebounding advantage as senior Sarah Heben (Lakewood, Ohio) had a career-high 11 rebounds and senior Jessica Kemp (Niagara Falls, Ont.) added 10. Heben also netted 13 points, tying her career high, for her first double-double of the season. She also had a game-best four steals.

The Purple Eagles open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Siena Friday at 7 p.m.
