Purple Eagles Shut Out Manhattan for Seventh-Straight Win

Freshman Emily Montgomery scored the game-winning goal in Niagara's shut out of Manhattan Sunday.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s soccer team (8-5-3, 6-0-1) remained in the hunt for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title Sunday when it knocked off Manhattan (5-10-0, 5-2-0), 1-0, at Gaelic Park on the Manhattan campus.

The Purple Eagles extended their winning streak to seven games when freshman Emily Montgomery scored her second goal of the season when she headed in a corner kick at the 54 minute mark. Sophomore Amber Niece picked up her team-leading fourth assist on the goal.

The victory puts Niagara in a tie for first with Loyola, which was idle Sunday. Both teams have two games remaining, Niagara hosts Rider and Loyola is at Canisius on Oct. 31, and then the teams clash on Monteagle Ridge in the Purple Eagles’ regular-season finale Nov. 2.

"This was a great win especially on the road," Niagara head coach Peter Veltri said. "It helped secure our postseason position in the MAAC Tournament."

Sophomore Katy Owings recorded her third shutout of the season, making five saves, including on a penalty kick. Manhattan was awarded the kick when Lindsay Bernstein was fouled in the penalty area. Owings made a diving stop on the shot to keep the game scoreless going into halftime.

Niagara had nine corner kicks and both teams had 10 shots each. In their seven-game winning streak, the Purple Eagles have outscored their opponents by a combined score of 17-7.

Niagara looks to continue its unbeaten streak when it hosts Rider on Halloween at 3 p.m. at Niagara Field.
