Niagara Women’s Soccer Extends Unbeaten Streak to Six

Senior midfielder Jen Greiner opened up scoring for the Purple Eagles in a 4-1 win over Saint Peter's
JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Niagara University women’s soccer team (7-5-3, 5-0-1 MAAC) defeated Saint Peter’s, 4-1, at Jaroschak Field, Friday to remain undefeated in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.

Riding a five-game unbeaten streak heading into Friday’s game with the Peacocks (1-15-1, 0-5-1 MAAC), the Purple Eagles found the back of the net early in the contest and never relinquished the lead thereafter. Senior midfielder Jen Greiner (Syracuse, N.Y.) finished a cross from senior Allie Sahlen (Elma, N.Y.) in the 14th minute to give Niagara an early 1-0 lead. The Purple Eagles would only build on that lead later in the contest.

Early in the second half, senior forward Rosie Luzak (Youngstown, N.Y.) scored her first of two goals, when she beat Saint Peter’s goalkeeper Andrea Kovalcik in the 54th minute. Luzak, MAAC Player of the Week, would later score her team-leading 10th goal of the 2003 season in the 68th minute to give the Purple Eagles a commanding 4-0 lead over the Peacocks.

"We came out in the second half and capitalized on opportunities that allowed us to put the game away," Niagara head coach Peter Veltri said of his team’s latest victory.

In addition to the scoring of Luzak and Greiner, senior forward Kristin Muoio (Lewiston, N.Y.) had a goal in the win for the Purple Eagles, her first goal of the season. Freshman midfielder Emily Montgomery (Oshawa, Ont.) contributed with two assists and sophomore defender Amber Niece (Port Colbourne, Ont.) had one assist, both tying the team lead in assists on the year with three each.

In a 15 minute period early in the second half, the Purple Eagles’ attack scored three goals, highlighted by Luzak’s two, and put the game out of reach with the four-goal lead.

Saint Peter’s midfielder Alison Regler scored the lone goal for the Peacocks in the 85th minute, beating senior goalkeeper Alayna Loiselle (Mississauga, Ont.) and spoiling the Purple Eagles’ shutout bid.

In the game, Niagara outshot Saint Peter’s, 17-11.

All three Niagara goalkeepers saw action in Friday’s victory. Sophomore Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.), MAAC Defensive Player of the Week, made three saves in the victory. With Loiselle, junior Melissa Himes (Fulton, N.Y.) also saw action in the contest for Niagara, neither goalkeeper registering a save.

In their six-game winning streak, the Purple Eagles have outscored their opponents by a combined score of 16-7, with Luzak leading the scoring with five goals in the six-game streak. Niagara looks to continue its unbeaten streak when visiting Manhattan College Sunday at 10 a.m. The game will be played at Gaelic Park on the Manhattan campus. In last year’s contest, played Oct. 13 at Niagara Field, Manhattan defeated Niagara, 2-0.
