LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Niagara women’s soccer team (4-5-3, 2-1) came from behind to tie fellow Metro Athlantic Athletic Conference foe Siena, 2-2 in double overtime, Sunday afternoon at Siena Field. Despite two second half goals in the final 16 minutes of play, the Purple Eagles could not manage to pull out their third-straight conference win.
“The team showed a great amount of character today coming back from a two-goal deficit,” head coach Peter Veltri said. “Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.) had a great day in goal making some key saves at some key times, especially in overtime”.
Siena scored first 30 minutes into the first half as Corry Silon found the back of the net. Niether team managed to score again before the half ended as Siena took the one-goal lead into halftime.
Saints, Katie Ferry gave Siena a two-goal lead at the 65:58 mark.
The Purple Eagles began their comeback on a penalty kick that was issued after Saints goalkeeper Noel Cox slid into a Niagara player in an attempt to stop a one-on-one situation. Niagara defender, Amber Niece (Port Colborne, Ont.) converted on the penalty shot at the 74:36 mark to put the Purple Eagles within a goal. A little over 10 minutes later with the clock at 85:09, Niagara put away the game-tying goal that sent the two teams into overtime as Niece floated a corner kick that Emily Montgomery (Oshawas, Ont.) fired into the cage. Niece finished the game with a goal and an assist (3 pts.).
It was all Siena in the first overtime period, keeping the Purple Eagles from getting a single shot. In the second overtime period, the Saints got three shots, while Niagara managed one.
Owings recorded the tie for the Purple Eagles, making nine saves and allowing two goals.
The Purple Eagles are back in action Oct. 17 when they face Iona in their third-straight conference game of the season. Game time is 3 p.m. at Niagara Field and admission is free.
