Day Four Results
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles' swimming and diving teams capped off the 2017 MAAC Championships Saturday night at the Burt Flickinger Center. The women's team broke two school records and was able to leap Fairfield University on the final day, earning a fifth-place finish with 328 points. The Niagara men held sixth place throughout Saturday and finished the championships with 324 points.
Sydney Kligys,
Annie Eckhardt,
Julia Casolo, and
Kristen Suarez gave Niagara another relay record at the championships, swimming a 3:33.45 in the 400 free relay. Freshman
Hannah Charlton also improved upon her school record in the 200 fly. After breaking the record for the first time at the Zippy Invitational in December, Charlton lowered her career-best time further to 2:08.78 to take third in the MAAC finals.
Women's Day 4 Recap
- Sydney Kligys, Annie Eckhardt, Julia Casolo, and Kristen Suarez set another Niagara women's relay record with a time of 3:33.45 in the 400 free relay, nearly two seconds faster than the previous record.
- Hannah Charlton broke her own school record in the 200 fly, placing third at the MAAC Championships with a time of 2:08.78. Casolo placed tenth with a time of 2:11.75.
- Niagara placed two swimmers in the 'B' final of the 200 back, as Angelica Gordon placed 12th with a season-best 2:10.70 and Lauren Nicastro came in 14th at 2:14.60. Kathleen Wagoner also set a season-best time at 2:20.23 in the preliminaries.
- Kligys took a top-eight spot in the 100 free with a career-best time of 52.64, placing fourth. Suarez (53.86) and Nastassja Posso (55.91) also timed career-best finishes in the preliminaries.
- Bridgette Ehrmann placed 15th in the 200 breaststroke at 2:33.96, while Sarah Webber (2:34.97) and Jaime Rolf (2:40.17) posted career-best preliminary times.
- Montanna Valler took tenth place in the 1650 free finals with a season-best time of 18:53.92 to lead the Purple Eagles. Claire Schoemick placed 12th with a season-best time of 20:25.69.
Men's Day 4 Recap
- Alexander Pizzo placed in the top five of the men's 1650 free, finishing in fourth place with a time of 16:29.02. Thomas McManus (17:18.73) and Tanner Morey (18:13.57) finished 13th and 14th, respectively. All three swam season-best times.
- Andreas Rintel placed in the 'A' final for the 200 backstroke with a career-best time of 1:55.02 in the preliminaries. He swam six-hundredths of a second slower in the finals, finishing sixth with a time of 1:55.08.
- James Crumm led the Purple Eagles in the 100 free, earning a spot in the 'B' finals and placing 16th with a time of 47.57. He had a season-best time of 46.95 in the preliminaries. Daniel Leskowicz (48.02), Andrew Wilson (49.05), and Trevor Kline (49.70) all swam season-best times in the preliminaries of the 100 free.
- After a career-best 2:08.97 in the 200 breaststroke preliminaries, Nicolas Winograd placed 14th in the finals with a time of 2:09.92. Justin Sagasta turned in a career-best 2:17.11 in the preliminaries.
- Shawn Warner posted a season-best 1:52.33 in the 200 fly, good for ninth place. Season-best times were also reached by Daniel Ronen (1:57.57) and Kevin Verdejo (2:06.66).
- Warner, Leskowicz, Nicolas Winograd, and James Crumm took sixth in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:06.18.
Diving Board: Women's 1-Meter
- Haily Atkins placed in the top eight of the women's 1-meter diving event, scoring a 209.55 that was good for sixth place. Atkins took seventh on the 3-meter board earlier this season with a score of 191.75.
- Cara Mergner secured a pair of consolation final victories after doing so on the 3-meter board on Thursday. Following a score of 189.70 in the preliminaries, Mergner capped off the MAAC Championships with a 195.55 in the finals for ninth place.
