Warner, Winograd Turn In Record Performances Friday At MAAC Championships

Day Three Results

BUFFALO, N.Y. – On the third day of the MAAC Swimming & Diving Championships, Shawn Warner and Nicolas Winograd gave Niagara two more program record-setting performances, bringing the team to four new records set at this year's championship event. Warner set the 400 IM record with a second-place finish in the finals at 3:59.24, while Andreas Rintel gave Niagara a second top-eight finisher with a career-best time of 4:07.18 in fifth place.
 
Nicolas Winograd also topped his program record in the 100 breaststroke that he set at the 2016 MAAC Championships. Winograd placed sixth in the finals with a time of 57.32.
 
On the women's side, the Purple Eagles were able to place three swimmers in the top eight of the 100 fly, as Julia Casolo (third), Sydney Kligys (fourth), and Hannah Charlton (seventh) all advanced to the 'A' final.
 
With one day to go in the 2017 MAAC Championships, the Niagara women sit in sixth place with 220 points, just seven behind fifth-place Fairfield. The Niagara men are also in sixth place entering the final day of competition, eight points behind fifth-place Iona.
 
Men's Day 3 Recap
  • In the men's 400 IM, Shawn Warner broke his own school record and medaled in the top three, placing second with a time of 3:59.24. Warner also improved upon his Niagara program record time in the 200 IM on Thursday.
  • Andreas Rintel also placed in the top eight of the 400 IM, swimming a career-best 4:07.18 for fifth place.
  • Nicolas Winograd set a program record in the 100 breaststroke at a second-straight MAAC Championship, increasing upon last year's time with a 57.32 that placed him sixth in the finals.
  • Daniel Ronen swam a season-best time of 9:49.63 in the 1000 free to place 13th. He was followed by fellow Purple Eagles Alexander Pizzo (9:59.27) and Tanner Morey (10:37.62).
  • Matthew Ricks swam a career-best 51.45 in the preliminaries of the men's 100 fly, moving him up to seventh on Niagara's all-time top 10 for that event. Ryan Storms also swam a season-best time of 55.00.
  • Ricks also led Niagara in the 100 backstroke with a preliminary time of 54.93.
  • Senior James Crumm led Niagara in the 200 free with a 1:44.28, good for 11th place. Daniel Leskowicz followed in 14th at 1:45.83.
  • In the 400 medley relay, Rintel, Winograd, Warner, and Crumm picked up a sixth-place finish with a time of 3:27.24.
 
Women's Day 3 Recap
  • Niagara picked up three spots in the top eight of the women's 100 fly, the team's best event of the day. Julia Casolo led the Purple Eagles in third at 57.54, followed closely by Sydney Kligys at 57.63 and Hannah Charlton at 58.27.
  • Sarah Webber and Angelica Gordon both earned career-best times in the 400 IM. Webber placed in the 'B' final and took 15th with her time of 4:51.54, while Gordon broke her previous best with a preliminary time of 4:57.36.
  • Lauren Nicastro also swam a season-best time, finishing the 100 backstroke preliminaries with a time of 1:00.99.
  • In the 100 breaststroke, Niagara placed two women in the 'B' final with Bridgette Ehrmann finishing 14th at 1:10.87 and Annie Eckhardt finishing 15th at 1:11.00.
  • Kristen Suarez led the Purple Eagles in the 200 free at 2:01.75.
  • In the 1000 free preliminaries, Montanna Valler swam a time 11:16.01 and Claire Schoemick finished in 12:16.09.
  • Kligys, Ehrmann, Casolo, and Suarez teamed up for the 400 medley relay, and the foursome took fifth place with a time of 4:00.20.
 
Diving Board: Men's 3-Meter
  • JaRon Williams turned in his second-best performance of the season on the 3-meter board with a score of 291.90 in the preliminaries. In the finals, he scored a 269.50 and took fourth place.
  • Noah Barnard joined Williams in the top eight of the 3-meter diving event with a preliminary score of 246.75. He finished eighth with a score of 200.05 in the finals.
  • In the consolation final, Khallid Lewis scored a 20-point improvement over his preliminary score and was able to secure 11th place with a score of 137.45 in the finals.
