WINTHROP, Mass. – Niagara hockey junior forward Tanner Lomsnes was named Travel Team USA Player of the Week and freshman goaltender Brian Wilson was named Travel Team USA Rookie of the Week by the Atlantic Hockey Conference (AHC), as the league announced its weekly awards on Tuesday.
Lomsnes tied for the conference scoring lead with four points in two games last weekend, including a point on both game-winning goals, as Niagara earned a road sweep over last season's AHC champion, Air Force. The junior was one of three Purple Eagles with three points in a 6-3 win on Dec. 1, tallying one goal and two assists, including the set-up assist on Johnny Curran's game-winning goal. Lomsnes followed that effort up with a game-winning goal and a plus-3 rating in Niagara's 5-2 win on Dec. 2.
Lomsnes is tied for third in Atlantic Hockey with 17 points (12+5) in 15 games, and he is tied for fourth in the NCAA with 12 goals. He also has more games with three or more points (three) than any other player in Atlantic Hockey. This is the first career weekly award for Lomsnes.
Wilson backstopped the Purple Eagles to the team's first road sweep at Air Force since Feb. 2005 last weekend, going 2-0-0 with a 2.50 goals-against average and .926 save percentage, ranking third in the conference in both categories last week. Wilson stopped a season-high 40 shots as Niagara was outshot 43-27 by Air Force but earned a 6-3 victory on Dec. 1. He followed that up with a 23-save effort in a 5-2 Niagara win on Dec. 2. Previously named Travel Team USA Goaltender of the Week on Oct. 31, Wilson is tied for the AHC lead with seven wins and is third with a 2.44 goals-against average. In conference play, Wilson has an AHC-best 2.01 goals-against average and is second with a .922 save percentage, going 7-2-1.
The Purple Eagles, nationally ranked at No. 20 in this week's USCHO.com Men's Division I Poll, return to Dwyer Arena this weekend after a five-game road trip. Niagara faces off against crosstown rival Canisius in the first of four Battle of the Bridge matchups on Friday, Dec. 8 at 7:05 p.m. For ticket information, please contact the Niagara Ticket Office at (716) 286-TIXX (8499),
