Swimming & Diving Hosts Canisius On Senior Day Saturday

The Purple Eagles men's and women's swimming and diving teams conclude the home portion of their 2016-17 dual meet schedule with a pair of meets this weekend. Niagara welcomes crosstown rival Canisius for the team's Senior Day meet on Saturday, Jan. 20. The Purple Eagles and Golden Griffins will start the day with the diving events at 11 a.m. The team's presentation honoring the nine graduating members of the team will take place at the conclusion of the diving events, followed by the swimming portion of the meet.
 
On Sunday, Jan. 21, the women's team will compete in a meet against the University of New Hampshire starting at 10 a.m. The Wildcats will come to Monteagle Ridge after competing at Binghamton on Saturday. After Sunday's meet, Niagara concludes the regular season at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 28 before co-hosting the MAAC Championships at the Burt Flickinger Center in Buffalo, New York beginning on Feb. 8.
 
Last Time Out
  • Niagara competed against the University at Buffalo Bulls last weekend. In addition to a dual meet on Jan. 13 and 14, the Purple Eagles' divers competed in the UB Diving Invitational.
  • Shawn Warner and Trevor Kline picked up second-place finishes for the Purple Eagles at Buffalo. Warner swam a 52.88 in the 100 IM, while Kline picked up his top finish in the 100 free this season with a second-place time of 52.05.
  • Niagara got a third-place finish in the women's 150 fly from Julia Casolo, who swam a 1:35.49.
  • At the UB Diving Invitational, JaRon Williams finished in the top eight on both boards. He scored a 239.90 to take seventh in the men's 3-meter event, and his 220.15 gave him an eighth-place finish on the 1-meter board.
 
Senior Day  
Canisius Golden Griffins
  • Niagara won 11 events in last year's meet against Canisius. The Purple Eagles' men fell by a narrow margin of 153-147, while the Canisius women outscored Niagara 189-98.
  • Shawn Warner was a triple-winner with wins in the 200 IM and the 100 and 200 fly events.
  • Robert Brown swam top times in the 50 free (21.30) and 100 free (47.66).
  • Canisius swept its meet against Gannon University last weekend, with the men leading 111-91 and the women taking a 117-77 victory.
  • Rebecca Anthone was a triple-winner with top finishes in the 100, 500, and 1000 free. On the men's side, Greg Staebell (400 IM, 200 backstroke) and James Pokornowski (500 & 1000 free) were both double-winners.
 
University of New Hampshire Wildcats
  • New Hampshire is back in the pool for the first time since Nov. 20, 2016 this weekend, with meets at Binghamton and Niagara.
  • The Wildcats' last time in the pool was at Boston University's Terrier Invitational, where the team came in seventh place with 211.5 points.
  • New Hampshire junior Liza Baykova, a three-time America East Swimmer of the Week honoree by CollegeSwimming, set a pool record at the Terrier Invitational with a first-place time of 49.68 seconds in the 100 free.
