Williams Qualifies For NCAA Zone Championships At Binghamton

The Purple Eagles men's and women's swimming and diving teams turned in a number of strong performances during their meet at Binghamton University on Saturday. The highlight of the day was JaRon Williams' performance in the 1-meter dive. With a score of 301.57, Williams surpassed the qualifying cutoff of 300 for the 2017 NCAA Zone Championships. Williams is eligible to compete in the Zone A Championships at Virginia Tech from March 6-8, 2017.
 
On the men's side, Shawn Warner was a triple-winner after winning two individual events in the first meet of the season at Fredonia State. Niagara freshman Nastassja Posso earned two wins for a second-straight meet to start her career.
 
In the double dual meet format, the Niagara women earned a 205-89 win over Siena, but was clipped by Binghamton by a score of 158.5 to 131.5. The Niagara men were outscored by their counterparts from Binghamton 164.5 to 129.5.
 
Men's Meet Notes
  • In addition to his qualifying score in the 1-meter dive, JaRon Williams secured first place in the 3-meter dive at Binghamton with a score of 277.50.
  • Shawn Warner earned three individual wins in the dual meet with Binghamton. After winning two events in the season opener Oct. 7 at Fredonia, Warner took top honors in the 100 butterfly (51.07), 200 butterfly (1:54.32), and 200 IM (1:55.17).
  • The 200 free relay team of Christopher Fritschi, Nicolas Winograd, Shawn Warner, and Robert Brown earned second place in 1:37.61.
  • Andreas Rintel's 54.59 in the 100 backstroke was good for third place.
  • Winograd earned two second-place finishes with a 1:00.28 in the 100 breaststroke and a 2:15.68 in the 200 breaststroke.
  • James Crumm earned a second-place finish in the 100 free, finishing four-hundredths of a second behind first with a time of 49.08.
 
Women's Meet Notes
  • Freshman Nastassja Posso was a double-winner for the second straight meet to start the 2016-17 season. She picked up her second wins in both the 500 free (5:22.68) and 1000 free (11:06.04).
  • Bridgette Ehrmann earned third place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.73.
  • Julia Casolo earned her second 100 butterfly win of the year in 59.48, taking second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:15.51.
  • Hannah Charlton got a second-place finish in the 100 butterly behind Casolo with a 1:02.16.
  • The Niagara women swept both diving events, as Emily Deck won the 1-meter dive (208.88) and Haily Atkins took first in the 3-meter dive (215.85).

  • The Niagara women are back in action next week as the Purple Eagles head to Youngstown State on Friday, Oct. 28. The dual meet begins that day at 5 p.m.
  • The Purple Eagles men are off until the team's home-opening dual meet Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. against the University of Waterloo.
