NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Freshman Maria Ortiz of the Niagara women's tennis program was named Student-Athlete of the Week after going 4-0 this past weekend in conference play.  

The Ibague, Columbia native collected two wins in No. 4 singles action and two victories in No. 2 doubles with partner Ashley Ta. 

Ortiz helped Niagara end its six-match losing streak in the 5-2 win over Siena on Saturday.  The Management major defeated Danielle Crill, 6-2, 6-2 in No.4 singles and then grabbed a victory in No. 2 doubles with a 9-8 win over Cassandra Braz and Jessica Macaluso.  

The following day against Marist, the freshman fought back from a set down against Sabrina Tahir to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in No. 4 singles.  She completed her weekend with a win in doubles action against Joana Sun and Sabrina Tahir, 8-2. 

Ortiz and the Purple Eagles are back on the court for a non-conference match against St. Joseph's at Noon at the Niagara tennis courts.
