Spanbauer captained the freshman basketball team and later the varsity team in his senior year. Spanbauer was a member of Niagara’s first NIT team and was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player that year. During his senior year, he averaged 9.1 points and shot 70 percent from the free-throw line. In 1951-52, Spanbauer averaged 8.7 points.
