First let me start by saying this was supposed to happen last year. In 2006-2007, when I first saw Pat swim the butterfly, I knew he had the potential to break the 50 second barrier. I even went as far as to tell him he could make the NCAA provisional time of 48.50. Pat trained extremely hard toward this goal. He raced the 100 fly at every meet and had the same result. He always seemed to tighten up on the last 10 yards. At the championship last year he did not achieve his lifetime best.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Niagara senior Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.) continued his postseason success as the swimmer claimed the 100 butterfly title at the ECAC Championships on Saturday at Trees Pool in Pittsburgh, Pa. Garvey touched the wall at 49.77, shattering his old 100 fly record, becoming the first ECAC Champion in school history.

In just his first weekend of competition, the freshman shattered a seven-year-old diving record.
