COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Niagara University women's lacrosse team was unable to get past the No. 15 Ohio State Buckeyes, falling 15-2 at Woody Hayes Indoor Facility Sunday afternoon.
"I could not be more proud of our team and the effort they displayed on the field today," head coach
Wendy Stone said. "We fought for 60 minutes and hung with one of the best teams in the country for most of the game."
Taylor Wolf and
Hannah Barnett led the Purple Eagles in scoring with one goal apiece, while Molly Woody put away three for the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes (5-1) got off to a 3-0 run to start the game before Wolf tallied her seventh goal of the season for Niagara (1-2). From there Ohio State responded with two straight scores in a two-minute span and went into halftime with a 6-1 lead.
OSU got out to another quick start in the second half and strung together four straight before the Purple Eagles could strike again. Barnett, who was able to put her shot away, score at the 10:44 mark of the second half to make it 10-2. That would mark the end of the scoring for Niagara, as the Buckeyes recorded the game's final five goals.
Forced errors troubled the Purple and White in the loss as they committed 20 turnovers in the game, while Ohio State tallied 11. The Buckeyes also took the shooting advantage in the game, 35-18, however the Purple Eagles took a 12-6 edge in draw controls won.
Amanda Yavorek suffered the loss for NU, but finished the game with a career best eight saves. Tori DeScenza got the win for Ohio State and finished making 11 saves.
"We raised the level of our play and toughness on the defensive end of the field throughout the weekend," Stone continued. "We will look to clean up our transition game as we move on to face Florida next week."
Niagara heads south, traveling to No. 4 Florida for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, Mar. 7, before continuing the swing Wednesday at Stetson.
